RECORDED:    75 °    FISHING: Good

3/13/07 Update
The rains have stopped for three days.  The Upper Rogue has decent visibility and very fishable flows.  Elk and Trail Creeks are both adding color to the river.  Get that fly DOWN!

3/9/07
For anyone willing to put their snow-board or skis away for a day, tune in. Winter Steelhead are ending their saltwater sabbaticals and returning home.  These plump silver streaks are occupying the well know pools in the Grants Pass area of the Rogue River and the Applegate River.  Watch the Rogue Flows as storms are coloring the river.  A few reports of winter chrome above Gold Ray are coming in as well. Over 3,112 winter steelhead have cleared the dam already.

Don't be fooled by imposters!!  If you hook a colored up steelhead that fights like a
Mann Lake cutthroat, you have just found a summer steelhead that just cannot get enough of the freshwater life style.  Any fish with large girth and a bad attitude towards your sharp hook is likely a winter run, regardless of color.  A bright fish is almost a given, regardless of athletic ability and stamina.

If the big flows of the Upper Rogue do not fit your style, try a trip to the
Applegate River.  This river has lots of private and public access.  It is small, and runs as clear as the Metolius.  If hooking steelhead in small water appeals to you, the Applegate might be your cup of tea.  Mike Williams, Trophy Waters Staff, and Pete Emori both hook winter steelhead on March 7th on the Applegate. With consistent clear flows it’s not as big of a risk, to “blow-out”, for people traveling long distance, and, it is full of steelhead right now!!
Are you a winter trout bum?  The next month may very well be the best of the year for mayfly hatches on the
Rogue River.  Blue Winged Olives (BWO’S) in sizes #18-#14 and March Browns in size #12 can make for some fast and furious trout fishing. The section between hatchery and Rogue Elk Park is excellent for drift boaters.  Look for hatches around 1:00 pm as of current.

THE APPLEGATE WILL CLEAR FIRST, THEN THE ROGUE.

Rogue River - Upper - August 16th, 2006
 FISHING: Good
River Flow:  As of 8/16  the river level is 1,850 cfs out of the dam.

Humble Unbiased Commentary: The Rogue is continuing to fish better than most rivers for steelhead of all sizes. Choose a method, any method…and pick the prescribed optimal day light conditions for that method wisely.  Lower fishing pressure on weekdays.   The weekends are definitely bringing out the boat traffic. The temp is still 52 degrees out of the dam. Consider swinging wet flies on a floating or sink-tip line before we get 42 degree water.  Agent Orange (a picture of this fly in photo gallery) is still one of our best flies to nymph fish with, and the hot droppers have been rosey steelie P.T., prince nymphs, and olive skip nymphs. Steelhead are all the way up river in good numbers. If you cannot wade to your favorite low water spot yet, try to learn a new spot where fish hold at the current water level.
Fish Counts: As of August 10th 5,200 steelhead over Gold Ray dam.  Remember that the section upstream from Gold Ray will go to a fly only regulation on Sept. 1st. This will last until October 31!! After fly season starting Nov. 1st there is still a "no bait" reg on most of the upper river.

**Remember as a courtesy to everyone using the boat ramps to do all preparations before occupying the ramp so a quick launch can be accomplished. Putting on waders or inflating a boat with a vehicle monopolizing the ramp is a poor reflection of character and is punishable for up to seven years bad fishing luck by the fishing gods.**

Hyatt Lake - June 8th, 2006
 FISHING: Excellent
Trophywaters.net fishing report.

1-541-734-2278

Hyatt is an easy to get to reservoir in the cascades west of Ashland.

Take Exit 14 off I-5 in Ashland follow Highway 66 (approximately 15 miles) until you reach the Greensprings Inn, take a left on Hyatt Lake Rd about 2.5 miles to Hyatt Lake.

The flies that worked best were bead head crystal buggers, dumbbell eyed leaches, and Chernobyl Ants on the surface.  Floating lines, and 8 ft. Scientific Angler Bass leader (16lb.). The Steelhead Taper Mastery line really helps to turn the big and heavy stuff over.

The best rubber lures were tan brush hogs, and tan salamanders.  Both had different flakes in them.

Good luck on the water……

TROPHYWATERS.NET FISHING REPORT:
Ph# 1-541-734-CAST(2278)

I was at the Holy Water Yesterday and watched fly anglers hook trout on dry flies.

The salmon flies and golden stones have been hatching on the Upper Rogue river for about three weeks now.

The Holy Water in now in full swing.  Bugs EVERYWHERE!!   Fishing will continue to be more crowded as we move towards the peak of the hatch. I have talked to multiple fly anglers already that have hooked Holy Water Trout on Salmon flies.

Look for warm windy days to skip work, or fish the evening.  Be sure to take at least two different patterns to the Holy Water, now that lots of fish are getting hooked try some smaller patterns like #8 & #10 stimulators in Royal and Olive.  These fish see plenty of flies and you must be able to show an actively rising trout more than one offering.  Fluorocarbon is highly recommended.

Holy Water Tip:
Try to find a comfortable rising rainbow and get position(above) on it.  Treat your first cast like a field goal kicker in sudden death.  It is often your best chance to get connected to a selective fish.  If a great cast goes unnoticed, consider waiting for the fish to rise again to another natural before your next attempt.  I often see people “overcastting” while pursuing these spring creekish selective rising trout.

Trout are available right now via dry fly presentation, or sub surface, BUT, this is no gimme pond.  Smaller tippet than normal, soft casts and attention to detail will maximize your efforts to get connected.

This productive trout water is good in the offseason too!!
