Rogue River - Upper - October 29th, 2003
FISHING: Excellent
River Flow: As of 10/29 the river level is 900 cfs out of the dam. The temp is 42 degrees out of the dam.
Humble Unbiased Commentary: The Rogue is still fishing exceptionally well for steelhead of all sizes, and lots of fly fishers are getting connected to fish. A few people have claimed to have hooked coho allready. And reports of coho stacking up below Rainy Falls supports this. It will not be long before the coho are in the upper river in good numbers. Fishing with swinging wet flies is tuff with 42 degree river temps. Mornings can be especially slow with the swing. With the addition of "October Caddis" bouncing around and a bit warmer water temps in the evenings, traditional methods may render a grab at this time of day. Fishing Pressure is getting heavier for both wade and float fisherman. Agent Orange and the Sept'Ober Softhackle have been our best flies to nymph fish with, and the hot droppers have been copper nymphs, skip nymphs in both colors, and Chewy Eggs. The fall salmon are out of the runs and onto the redds, and many fish have purchased their egg goggles. Steelhead are all the way up river in good numbers. You can most likely wade to your favorite low water spots now, take great care not to trounce through the redds of spawning salmon.
October 17th: I guided fishermen Jeff Carl of Albany, OR and Kelley Mingus of Klamath Falls, OR. Another very productive outting for adult steelhead for these two skilled anglers. Jeff also has the world's finest lucky fishing hat. Agent Orange, Sept'Ober Soft Hackle both caught big steelies. Hot Droppers were #10 small egg, B. H. Hare's Ear. The river changed color around 11:00 am. Not sure what caused the water to turn so milky green, but, it had no effect on our fishing.
October 16th add-ons: Matt York was on the river today and hooked steelhead in the upper river. The largest landed was 28" inches. Matt reports that some fish didn't quite make it to the "landing" stage. I guided Cris and Howard Bell of Tule Lake today. We fished with river detective strike indicators, 2x fluorocarbon, and an egg pattern dropper. The fish were all over a #10 small egg. Fishing and catching was favorable. Here are some highlights of this great day on the river. (Photo 1, Photo 2, Photo 3, Photo 4, Photo 5, Photo 6, Photo 7)
Monday October 13th tidbid: Large summer run steelhead landed last night after work in the Modoc area. A nice smaller fish too. Dale Hile of Trophy Waters hooked two adults on a Hare's Ear. He got the fish in close, but, not to hand. Dale was fishing at Tou Velle with Pete Emouri(great fly tier!). Pete landed a nice 4 lb. steely on an egg patten.
WARNING: the water temp in now down to 42 degrees, yep that’s right only 10 degrees above freezing. Micro-drag on the fly will not cut the mustard at this water temp. Keep up on your mends and drift the flies A.S.A.P. (As Slow As Possible).
The fall colors are stunning right now an make trips to the river extra pleasant.
Fish Counts: As of October 15th 12,075 steelhead over Gold Ray dam. Remember that the section upstream from Gold Ray went to a fly only regulation on Sept. 1st. This will last until October 31!! After fly season starting Nov. 1st there is still a "no bait" reg on most of the upper river.
**Remember as a courtesy to everyone using the boat ramps to do all preparations before occupying the ramp so a quick launch can be accomplished. Putting on waders or inflating a boat with a vehicle monopolizing the ramp is a poor reflection of character and is punishable for up to seven years bad fishing luck by the fishing gods.**

Weekend Update: Trophy Waters had fly fishers on the water Friday, Saturday(very cold morning), and Sunday. Our head guide Matt York had lots of hook-ups with skilled Rogue angler Ron Villa and his fishing partner Mike. Friday was my guiding day, with two skilled trout fisherman Bill Blanchette and his fishing partner Jim. These guys could drift a fly really well and hooked plenty of adult steelhead. We had fish eating the Sept’Ober soft hackle, running up stream-down stream, and jumping. If only we had a kiss from Marilyn Monroe for every fish that escaped.
Jim pulled one fish to the net which taped at 24” inches, and Bill landed 5 sea run cutthroat. And at one point that included 4 fish in a row, ALL SEARUN CUTTHROAT. I’ve never seen that one before.
I floated a short day Saturday and did an evening fish Sunday on foot. Fishing was not electric, But hey, it’s the Rogue. And you gotta love a river that on a slow day means you still got steelhead to the net. WARNING: the water temp in now down to 42 degrees, yep that’s right only 10 degrees above freezing. Micro-drag on the fly will not cut the mustard at this water temp. Keep up on your mends and drift the flies A.S.A.P. (As Slow As Possible).
Store Chat from Trophy Waters : Larry Garrison of Bear Creek stopped in to tell us of a successful evening trip to Tou Velle Park. He only managed to hook one fish during a quick outing, but, landed it. At 29” inches long I can see why his time was spent fighting steelhead and not just hooking steelhead. Larry tells us that he was fishing an indicator with an Agent Orange under it about 9‘ feet down. That’s a giant steelhead for the Upper Rogue , thanks for the store chat Larry.

Rogue River - Upper - October 8th, 2003
FISHING: Excellent
River Flow: As of 10/8 the river level is 898 cfs out of the dam. The temp is 45.5 degrees out of the dam.
October 7th tidbit: This morning before work, I headed out for a quick fish with Mark McClune to film some fishing tips for our local viewers. We got lucky enough to hook and land one small trout. About 6 inches at best. And one small native steelhead. About 16 inches at best. And, one adult hatchery steelhead. About 4 pounds at best.
The air temperature(in the shade) and water temperature were plenty chilly, but did not affect the activity level of the fish in regard to the dead drifted flies. The trout and the half pounder had their egg goggles on. The adult steelhead had to have Agent Orange. The equipment list included, 9’ 2x fluorocarbon leader. 2x fluorocarbon tippet to the dropper fly. A Hart’s “River detective” strike indicator, size #6. Simms waders. Chota spiked quick lace boots(nice with cold hands), and a Sony camera I would love to own.
Weekend Update:I spent the 4th and 5th of October floating the river with my wife. We had some nice weather, good bird watching, and great fishing. Lunch was average. We hooked steelhead of all sizes.(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) The hot fly for trout, half pounders, small adult steelhead and large adult steelhead was the Sept’Ober Softhackle. Whew………….was that fly effective.
The Nymphing was the method as swinging did not produce. We fished wet flies and skaters both mornings. One steelhead was hooked Sunday morning on a skating Trophy Waters Twitcher, but not landed. The slow rising steelhead was resting in a very slow, shaded, ice cold morning current. Some trout were landed on the Tou Velle Twinkie under Saturday’s warm cloudy skies, but no big grabs from Mr. or Mrs. Steelhead.
Other flies that produced steelhead were the chewy egg, Agent Orange, skip nymph (olive), and a pattern called the “20 incher”. We fished with 2x fluorocarbon 9’ft. leaders with about 6 feet from our indicator to the first fly. Trip highlights were a 27” hen landed by Jenni, and a rare 30” hen. And yes, that one saw the tape.
Store Chat from Trophy Waters : Pete Emori (Oct. 1st) tells us that he has found large amounts of fall caddis in the Gold Hill to Valley of the Rogue section of river. He says the water is warmer down their and the steelhead have provided some big aggressive yanks! Thanks for the update on a less traveled piece of water Pete.
Humble Unbiased Commentary: The Rogue is continuing to fish exceptionally well for steelhead of all sizes. Fishing with swinging wet flies is getting tougher because of dropping river temps. Mornings can be especially slow with the swing. With the addition of "October Caddis" bouncing around and a bit warmer water temps in the evenings, traditional methods will render higher yields at this time of day. Fishing Pressure is getting heavier for both wade and float fisherman. The water level is creeping down and the temp is now 45.5 degrees out of the dam. Agent Orange and the Sept'Ober Softhackle have been our best flies to nymph fish with, and the hot droppers have been copper nymphs, Robo P.T. , and Chewy Eggs. The fall salmon are out of the runs and onto the redds, so egg patterns have become important to the fish. Steelhead are all the way up river in good numbers. You can most likely wade to your favorite low water spots now, take great care not to trounce through the redds of spawning salmon.
Fish Counts: As of September 14th 10,23 steelhead over Gold Ray dam. Approx 1,502 steelhead have arrived at the hatchery. This means that a pile of steelhead are waiting in the river for you!! Remember that the section upstream from Gold Ray went to a fly only regulation on Sept. 1st. This will last until October 31!! After fly season starting Nov. 1st there is still a "no bait" reg on most of the upper river.

September 30th tidbit: Last night I found another steelhead willing to eat a swinging fly, on a dry line. The chrome hen of 25"(taped) exploded on my skater(Trophy Waters Twitcher) twice with out touching it. I could not get that fish back to the dry, but the first cast with a green butt skunk got a splashy, solid hook up with two immediate jumps and an electrifying first run. I'm finding that I can still hook steelhead in the surface, with these cold water temps., during evenings. The mornings are slow for the swing right now. Nymphing, however, in the mornings has been unmatchable. I have witnessed steelhead chasing October Caddis during the evenings, and am convinced this insect is keeping some steelhead excited enough to chase surface flies in this cold water.
Row vs. Wade River flows 1,500 cfs and up............advantage driftboat. River flows 899 cfs and down..........advantage bank access. River flows in between, duce............first serve.

Rogue River - Upper - October 3rd, 2003
FISHING: Excellent
River Flow: As of 10/3 the river level is 898 cfs out of the dam. The temp is 46 degrees out of the dam.
Brian Bouteller nymph fished his favorite run below Tou Velle last night (9/24). He hooked 10, yes 10 steelhead and landed 5 of those. He reports that the fish landed measured between 18" and 25". He was fishing with flourocarbon leader, a strike indicator, Black Rubber Leg Stone, and an egg pattern. Of the fish landed, all five were on the egg. Thanks for the report Brian, what a great memory last night will be.
Consider this last call for swinging wet flies on a floating line before we get 42 degree water soon. After that, sink tips will be a must to be consistent.
